Lumison has enjoyed steady, sustained growth. Over the years, it has evolved from a simple dialup ISP into the business-class, full-service ISP our clients rely on today to connect their businesses to the global internet.
Lumison is the brainchild of its CEO Aydin Kurt-Elli who, entranced by the opportunities presented by the internet, created edNET, a local Edinburgh-based dialup ISP, in 1995.
Right from the start, edNET focused on quality. So, when the ISP market polarised a few years later, Aydin’s fledgeling company set its sights on the business end of the market. These were customers who wanted a reliable, fast, effective internet access and hosting provider, and were willing to pay for robust and high quality support services.
The next milestone came in the late 1990s. Frustrated at the delay in the roll-out of a national broadband service, Ednet invested in one of the earliest implementations of WiFi technology – the 2km radius cell in Edinburgh, which offered speeds of up to 3Mb/s, was considered cutting edge at the time. It was also short-lived, thanks to the Radio Agency’s decision to reserve the 2.4GHz spectrum for private use, rather than internet access.
Ednet seized the opportunity to replace its innovative wireless service with another equally groundbreaking product – the UK’s first SDSL services, in 1999. Using “dry” copper circuits with our own SDSL modems, we migrated over the years to our own LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) offering, taking our equipment directly into BT exchanges across the central belt of Scotland.
One year later – and as soon as the wholesale network operators and Ofcom would allow – Lumison launched its broadband services. This was a real boon for small businesses keen to enjoy the high speed services that only leased line customers had been able to afford previously.
2004 was another big year for us. Ednet, as we knew it, became Lumison. Rebranding the company raised our profile on the national stage and helped us gain increased momentum. In the same year, we did something that most ISPs wouldn’t even have dreamt of – we built our own high performance, low impact Tier III datacentre just outside Edinburgh. A second facility, this time in London, followed suit in 2007. This provided us with the scalability and performance needed by clients who want a single supplier with geographic diversity or who demand to be close to their server infrastructure.
A lot has happened since then. The falling costs of network services has meant that Lumison customers who adopted leased line technology in the past could now afford to enjoy 10Mb and 100Mb MetroEthernet services de-rigeur. With this capacity, Lumison has also built up an enviable track record for the delivery of security, VPN, privateDSL, and now award-winning Voice over IP services.
Talking of award winning, Lumison has been a regular in the spotlight. Commercial awards and nominations include the Deloitte Fast50 (for 4 years running), Sunday Times TechTrack and Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards (both for 2 years running).
In recognition of our investment in our customers and the service we deliver, Lumison has also been recognised as the ISPA Best Business Broadband Providers (Sumo category), Best VoIP Provider (2007), and finalist for the Best Light and Heavy Business Broadband provider in subsequent years.
Most importantly to us, we’ve earned and continue to maintain customer recognition for outstanding service. Consistently delivering 95th centile performance in customer satisfaction surveys, Lumison works hard to ensure that our customers keep getting great value from our network and our teams.
